Lesson Introduction

Our intention with this lesson is to delve into the very famous guitar break / solo which starts at 2:16 in the song. Yes this is a drum lesson. However if you’ve listened to it, you’ll realise the drum pattern is not so simple to deconstruct. Until Now!

Note: This lesson is not intended to chart the whole song, rather to teach you how to construct the drum beat played during the guitar solo.

Level: Intermediate

Pre Requisite: Basic Understanding of Note Values.

 

Steps:

The steps we take to build this lesson will be broken down into these parts:

  1. Revise the Finished Product
  2. Review Kick and Snare on a Single Surface
  3. Break Snare & Kick Parts Into 2 Bar Segments
  4. Play All Bars at 100 BPM.

Step 1: Revise The Finished Product

The Beat

Firstly let’s review this beat, it’s an 8 bar section starting at approximately 2:16 in the song with a tempo of 120 bpm. We play playing the Hi-Hats as Quarters counting 1 2 3 4.

Step 2: Review Kick and Snare on a Single Surface

We simplify the beat by bringing the kick and snare parts to one surface, the snare.

Use a metronome with a tempo of 100 bpm, adjust as required.

Drum Pattern Using Snare Drum

  • We learn the above drum pattern using 2 Bar Segments in the following section.

Step 3: Break Kick & Snare Parts Into 2 Bar Segments

Tips:

  • Play 2 Bars at a time
  • Play Snare Pattern First Then Beat Patterns
  • Add Hi Hat as a Reference For Snare Patterns
  • Use a metronome with a tempo of 100 bpm, adjust as required
  • Audio samples repeat 4 times
  • Practice Until Competent
